Hairloss : Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair Transplants Can Offer A Permanent Hairloss Solution

A hair transplant involves removing skin with hair or just hair on its own and transplanting it to your scalp to fix your hairloss problem and replace the lost hair. Normally this hair is removed from the back (sometimes also the side) of your head and transplanted into the bald or thinning areas on your scalp. The hair that's transplanted is called donor hair - this is a term you'll hear transplant surgeons talking about a lot. Each unit of donor hair (it could be 1 or 5 hairs) is called a graft. It's important that you understand the lingo when you go shopping for a transplant.

What many people don't realize is that it can take several months for the transplanted hair to actually grow in properly - usually 60+ days or so for there to be visible signs of real hair. The transplanted hair actually falls out after a few days or weeks and then has to grow in again after that.

All transplants are the same in that it involves the moving of hair from one part of the body to your scalp. The only thing that changes is the way the doctor will remove the donor hair. Some clinics use lasers, others use punch drills (these belong in the stone age!), while others will use surgical precision to move individual hair or "units" of 2 - 3 hairs to their final location.

What if the transplant doesn't work? Well the first problem is that you'll have much less donor hair because it's been used up during the transplant. You'll also probably have a large hole in your bank account - transplants don't come cheap folks.

If you ask the victims of really bad hair transplants how they feel the response is usually "I'd rather be bald than look like this". Some transplant conmen will even have the cheek to suggest another hair transplant to try and cover up the damage they did in the first place.

Are all hair transplants a bad idea? Not at all. There are some very gifted surgeons out there peforming fantastic work each day. For example have a look at the work that Dr Ray Woods is doing here -> www.thewoodstechnique.com. This guy is helping repair the screw ups that other surgeons have made and you have to admit his results are impressive to say the least.

What Does A Hair Transplant Cost?
The cost depends on how much hair you get transplanted. You can expect a hair transplant to start at $500 per session and you'll need several sessions for the transplant to be complete. You should budget for between $5,000 and $10,000 for a complete and permanent hair transplant - again it all depends on how much hair you've lost and how much needs to be transplanted.

How To Choose Your Transplant
Always look for previously satisfied customers - ask to meet a previous client and to see proof of the clinics claims. Are any of the staff at the clinic or surgery suffering from hairloss. If so why haven't they had a transplant? If a previous patient can't be provided then the very least you should expect to see is video footage of the patient and the procedure itself.

When choosing a hair transplant please, please, please Ignore The Hype. This is surgery - take it seriously.

Hair Transplant Repair
For those of you who have already suffered at the hands of some hair transplant quack there is hope. You don't have to live with the dollhair look your entire life. There are clinics appearing who offer hope in the form of being able to repair your previous sloppy transplant and maybe even add some new hair at the same time. Again Dr Ray Woods (www.thewoodstechnique.com) is doing fantastic work in this area and his methods are now spreading around the world.

  • All hair transplants are surgey - expect to see some blood.

  • You will need at least a few days to recover from the transplant - your head and neck can get pretty swollen.

  • A hair transplant is the only permanent way to regrow your hair without ongoing expenses.
